Alexander Gorin is a professor of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. He is a holder of a conjoint Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics and PhD degree in Engineering Science. Due to his achievements he has been awarded as well the Higher post-doctoral Doctor of Science degree and an Academic title of Professor. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE, UK). His research in manufacturing and machining of advanced ceramics, composite materials, fundamental heat and mass transfer studies in porous media and fluid mechanics of separated flows, biofluidmechanics, multiphase systems, transport phenomena in living systems is widely recognized in the scientific and engineering communities. He has served on numerous organising committees for international conferences, has collaborated with various international institutions. He has published more than 200 papers, including books and patents. He is a member of Editorial Boards for International Journal of Energy & Technology, Bioceramics Development and Applications, Journal of Fluid Flow Heat and Mass Transfer and has been invited as a keynote speaker for many conferences, congresses, and symposia. More than 20 PhD students have been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree for studies completed under the Prof Alexander Gorin’s supervision.

Vladimir Lee received his MSc degree in chemistry from the Far–Eastern State University (Vladivostok) in 1982, and PhD degree in organic chemistry from the Institute of Organic Chemistry Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Moscow) in 1987. After a couple of PD stays at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (Seoul, Korea) in 1996 and at the Université Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France) in 1997, he is working at the University of Tsukuba (Tsukuba, Japan) currently holding a Lecturer position. He has been visiting professor at the several universities in Germany, France and Japan. He has authored over 110 papers in the peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters, and a monograph. He has about 200 presentations at the international and national conferences.

Dr. Yuyuan Zhao is Reader in Materials Engineering at the School of Engineering, the University of Liverpool, UK. He serves on the Editorial Board of Powder Metallurgy, the official journal of the European Powder Metallurgy Association. He obtained his BEng and MSc degrees from Dalian University of Technology, and DPhil from Oxford University. He worked as a Lecturer at Dalian University of Technology and a Research Fellow at Birmingham University before he joined Liverpool University as a Lecturer. He pioneered the Sintering and Dissolution Process (SDP) for manufacturing porous aluminium and further invented the Lost Carbonate Sintering (LCS) process, which has been commercialised for mass production of porous metals. He has published over 85 papers in the processing, characterisation and modelling of particulate, porous and composite materials.

Prof. Biezma studied Chemical Sciences, with Specialty of Materials Science and Metallurgy and obtained the special prize of PhD at University Complutense of Madrid, Spain, 1991, She is currently professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Head of Research Group of Degradation and Corrosion of Materials, at University of Cantabria, Spain from 1988. The main topics of research are devoted to looking for the relationship between microstructure of different metallic systems and corrosion behavior, stress corrosion cracking of rebar’s in concrete in marine environments, corrosion behavior of gas and petrochemistry pipelines, use the nondestructive testing by ultrasound to detect inner corrosion defects, or study wood properties. She usually visits University of Oporto, Portugal, University College of Horsens, Denmark, and University Technology of Wien, Austria, in Professor Erasmus Program. She has visited as research professor TUWIEN, Austria She has published more than 60 peer-reviewed journals, attended more than 50 international and national congress and she is reviewer of Journal related to Materials Science, Corrosion and Civil Engineering. She participates at Marie Curie Program, Research Night, pointing out special attention to diffusion science to children. I was born in 1967. I get my Ph. D degree at Middle East Technical University at 2001. I have been working for Karadeniz Technical University, since 1993. Following the research assistant position I have worked as a full time faculty member at Mining Engineering Department. I have taught underground mining, mine support, mine ventilation, mine design natural stone processing courses. My research area is underground mining, rock mechanics, rock breakage (cutting, sawing). I especially interested in material properties of rock and their effects in mechanical processes. Additionally, I am working on coal bed methane and CO2 Sequestration. I am currently supervising a project on CO2 sequestration. I have supervised some projects supported by intuitional and national authorities. I took part in scientific and advisory boards of some national and international meetings.

Professor Ramesh K. Agarwal is the William Palm Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. From 1994 to 2001, he was the Sam Bloomfield Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University in Kansas. From 1978 to 1994, he was the Program Director and McDonnell Douglas Fellow at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratory in St. Louis. Dr. Agarwal obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1975. He is the author and co-author of over 400 publications. His research interests are in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Renewable Energy Systems, and Nanotechnology. He is a Fellow of sixteen professional engineering societies including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He has been the recipient of many honors and awards.

Nowadays he is the head of the Group `Polymer Composite Materials and Interphases, having published more than 70 papers about polymers and polymer composites in reputed journals. He was Director of the Ph.D. program in Materials Science and Engineering of the University Carlos III of Madrid from 2006 to 2013.

Polymer interfaces in multiphase (micro and nanophases) materials using a variety of microscopic imaging methods and fluorescence based methods. Researching lines: i) Thermoplastic nanocomposite materials with especial electrical properties and ii) Thermoplastic nanocomposite materials with antibacterial activity. Characterization of polymers and composite materials; use of fluorescent probes and labels to monitor physico-chemical changes at a molecular scale; atomic force microscopy; structural, dynamics and ageing phenomena studies in polymer based materials.

Professor Michael Tausch, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Germany, has been awarded the inaugural Heinz Schmidkunz Prize by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCH, German Chemical Society). The award recognizes outstanding contributions to research into the teaching of chemistry, teacher training, and the development of material for teaching chemistry in schools. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2015 in Dresden, Germany, on August 31, 2015. Among other honors, Professor Tausch has received the Friedrich-Stromeyer Preis of the GDCh in 1994 and the Johann-Joachim Becher-Preis of the J. J. Becher-Gesellschaft in 2007.

Professor Tausch's work includes photochemistry in science education, curriculum innovation, and the development of didactic materials on silicones and cyclodextrins. Recently developed experimental kits and teaching materials refer to Photoprocesses in Science Education, Photo-SciEd, especially to: photo-, chemo- and electroluminescence, photogalvanic and photovoltaic cells, photoisomerisation and photocatalytic redox reactions. Experimental approaches to the elementary key steps occurring at molecular level are investigated and transcribed into printed and electronic teaching materials suitable for the communication of Photo-SciEd in close combination with convincing applications from technology and nature, such as: generation of light in energy saving devices (LEDs, OLEDs, fluorescence micro- and nanoscopy etc.), supply of electric energy from sunlight (photogalvanic cells, inorganic, organic and hybrid photovoltaic, fluorescence collectors etc.), sun light conversion and storage in long living chemical systems (the “sustainocene age” behind the capture and conversion of CO2”), thin layer photoreactors in living systems (in green leaves, human eyes, human skin etc.), the “photoreactor atmosphere” as a precondition for life on the planet Earth (stratospheric and tropospheric photochemistry), thin layer smart materials with molecular switches (photochromic and photoluminscent isomers in solid matrices).

Dr. Yogeshwar Sahai is Emeritus Professor in Materials Science & Engineering Department at The Ohio State University (OSU), Columbus. He was a regular faculty member at OSU from 1983 to 2014. He obtained his Ph.D. from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, England in 1979. He was a research associate at McGill University, Montreal, Canada before joining the faculty position at OSU in January 1983. He was Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tohoku University in Japan during 1995-96. His professional interests include design optimization and improvement in materials processing for electrochemical devices. His current research interest is in the area of developing high efficiency and cost-effective Fuel Cells. Dr. Sahai has published over 150 technical papers in peer reviewed journals and refereed proceedings, and has published 4 books and six patents. He received many awards for his teaching, research, and professional service for the past 35 years.

Dr Alain DEMOURGUES is working at ICMCB-CNRS-UPR9048 since october 1993 as Research Fellow. He became Research Director at CNRS in october 2008. He received IBM-France award in 1993 (Young scientist in Materials Science) and SFC (Société Française de Chimie) award in 2003 (Solid State Chemistry division). He is consulting scientist since 1998 at RHODIA-SOLVAY in the field of Solid State Chemistry, Redox and opto-electronic properties. He contributes to 128 publications (h-index 23) and 9 patents and gave 39 invited conference and 30 in international symposia. He was in charge of 20 industrial contracts and directed 19 PhD students. He is in charge of fluorine chemistry/inorganic fluorides unit (CNRS platform ‘Fluomat’) and cross functional axis related to exploratory solid state chemistry. He organized as chairman, the 14th European Symposium on Solid State Chemistry (14th ECSSC) in Bordeaux. Prof. Tenne received his PhD from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1976). After a post-doc in Battelle, Geneva (1976-1979) he joined the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot (Israel) where he became a full professor in 1995. The pioneering role of Prof. Tenne in 2D nanostructure research is well recognized. His work is often alongside people like Kroto, Smalley, Iijima, Geim, Novoselov and even Pauling, see for example Inorganics 2, 556 (2014); Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 177 (2015) and Chem. Comm. 50, 12360 (2014). He received numerous awards and recognitions including the MRS Medal (2005), Rothschild Prize (2015) and the Israel Chemical Society Gold Medal (2016). He is a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences; Academia Europaea (2011) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Materials Research Society.

Following the discovery of carbon fullerenes and carbon nanotubes Prof. Tenne discovered inorganic nanotubes (INT) and fullerene-like nanoparticles (IF) of WS2 and MoS2 (Nature 1992, 1993; Science 1995). He showed that nanoparticles of layered compounds, like MoS2, suffer fundamental instability akin to graphite nanoparticles, transforming into seamless (closed-cage) nanostructures. Recently numerous new nanotubes, including those from ternary “misfit” compounds, like PbS-TaS2 and CaCoO2-CoO2, covering many elements of the periodic table, were reported by him. Following intensive work he showed that these materials are superior solid lubricants (Nature 1997), which are now used commercially as additives to various lubricants with sales of app. 5,000 tones this year (2016). Furthermore, adding up to 2% IF and more so INT of WS2 (MoS2) to various polymers, metal alloys and concrete led to substantial enhancement in their strength; fracture toughness and thermal stability. Large number of applications is foreseen for these nanocomposites, from aerospace, automotive industry medical technologies to tissue engineering.

Elena Voloshina received her PhD in Chemistry in 2001 (Rostov State University, Russia). She was a postdoctoral research associate at RWTH Aachen University, at the Max Planck Institute for the physics of complex systems in Dresden and at the Free University of Berlin, Germany. Since 2014 she has been leading a junior research group at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. She has a broad experience in the development and application of theoretical techniques for investigation of the electronic structure of a wide range of systems. Mona Tréguer-Delapierre received a B.S. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Orsay, Paris Sud in 1996, and graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Orsay, Paris XI, under J.Belloni in 1999. She has received an award from the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris for her PhD thesis. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana (USA) with Dan Meisel, she joined the faculty as Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Bordeaux 1, in 2000. Her current interest involves the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, mainly gold and silver, with size and shape control and therefore with desired optical properties. Furthermore, her research is also focused on the surface modification and assembly of the nanoparticles to improve their versatility.

Our research in the group “Chemistry of Nanomaterials” is basically focused on the synthesis, characterization and applications of nanoparticles. The morphology control in the nanostructure is one of our favorite topics because of the spectacular effects that small changes in the shape of nanoparticles have on a variety of physical (optical, magnetic, electronic...) properties of the material. Colloidal synthesis has proven extremely useful to prepare a wide variety of nanoparticles with tight control of size and shape. Still, much of the knowledge in this area is empirical and no general rules can be provided for a rational nanomaterial design. We are particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms involved in nanoparticle growth, which determine the final size and shape. Though eminently fundamental, this research is required for the design of nanoparticle materials with tailored properties that can be used for practical applications. Examples of nanoparticles developed in the group with various morphologies are shown below.

Annabelle Bertin studied organic and inorganic chemistry at the University of Versailles (UVSQ), then specializing in chemistry and physico-chemistry of polymers at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), Paris, France, receiving a master degree in 2004. In 2007, she completed her PhD in chemistry at the University of Strasbourg (ULP) / Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg (IPCMS), France, on the topic of dendron-based materials for biomedical applications. Afterwards, she spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the department of Colloid Chemistry at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPIKG) in Potsdam-Golm, Germany, where she worked on bioinspired polymers and composite materials. She then joined for one year the team of Prof. Percec at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), USA, where her research topic dealt with self-assembly of Janus dendrimers based on carbohydrates and amino acids as drug delivery systems. In 2011, she joined the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, Germany, as a postdoctoral fellow and became the same year project leader in the division “Polymers in Life Sciences and Nanotechnology”. Since 2012 she is assistant professor in organic polymer chemistry at the Free University Berlin in the department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy and group leader of the research group "PolyNanotechBiomed" at BAM, in the department 6.0 Materials Protection and Surface Technologies.

Her main research interests are dendrons-based macromolecular and supramolecular architectures for biomedical applications (Focus: organic chemistry and physical chemistry of soft nanoparticles) and polymer-based (nano)composites for application in materials science such as sensing and mechanically reinforced composites (Focus: polymer chemistry, inorganic nanoparticle synthesis and materials science). The latest topic led her to develop novel thermoresponsive upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type polymers. Another of her recent lines of research is hybrid organic-inorganic copolymers.
